Summer Wines!

Summer Wines!

As I write this the blue skies over (the Cote de) Kirkcaldy look like never letting up, which would be a wonderful, if unlikely, occurrence. While they are here we must make the most of them, summer is far and away my favourite time of year, and simple dinners outside from the bbq with delicious wines are perfection.  Now that we can again have our nearest and dearest back around to help us enjoy them it is all the better.

I have some wines that I will always open time and again, both red and white Beaujolais definitely make the cut, classic unoaked Chardonnay (like the Beaujolais Blanc, Domaine de la Couvette) that is fresh and bright with lots of crunchy green apple, lifted lemon flesh and floral notes, make perfect warm evening drinking, especially with a grilled half Lobster. The soft and supple Gamay grape for the red is juicy and light in tannins so it doesn’t tire you out or make you sleepy in the late afternoon sunshine, it can even be served a little cooler to help keep it fresh and lively. Both of these will lend themselves to a variety of foods from the grill (white and red meats respectively). If you want something that little bit more robust and rich-red-meat-friendly, like the Scotch Beef Fillet Steak joint in the beautiful Ultimate Alfresco Dining Box, then the Cotes du Rhone Rouge from Guillame Gonnet is everything you could ask for. With the majority of this wine being dark fruit Grenache, backed up with a little spice from the Syrah it avoids any oak during fermentation or ageing. It has muscularity and ripeness which make it a perfect bedfellow for beef, but it is not so dense that it will also send you in that direction.

Making hay while the sun shine’s is the call for these day but also making sure to enjoy the warm evenings with friends, family, excellent food and a gorgeous glass of wine is also well deserved.
